Present Thoughts To Deliver To Our Soldiers Overseas

I am a recent college graduate and I am forever on the lookout for good gift ideas for my friends in the armed forces. On one hand, these soldiers are brave and noble. On the other hand, they are also in their 20 's, "just like me" i.e., not used to not having the comforts of home or the thrill of a good time. I wish to let you know my own gift idead for my friends in the troops. I hope you will be able to utilize these ideas to assemble a good gift basket for military overseas.

Gifts for the troops ideally fit into three categories: useful, fun, and good for bartering. Try to include at least two of these three categories in any box you send; a box full of nothing but "toys" is great, but doesn't help keep a soldier's feet warm; similarly, a box full of practical items mightbe polite, but it's no fun to share with one's buddies in the platoon.

Good useful items to include might be personal hygiene products such as dental floss, soap with soothing ingredients such as coconut oil, aloe or lotion. A favourite deoderant or toothpaste would be highly appreciated as would some soft wash clothing items. From a practical point of view; new underwear, undershirts, socks, bug repellant and air freshener would be good and welcome things to include. Do remember however; it would not be such a good idea to send food.

Our troops love fun things, too! For fun gift ideas to send to our troops, small electronic devices like iPods (load it with music before you send it!) and inexpensive digital cameras (with extra memory!) are a great idea. Platoons oftenhave a lucky guy whose family sent to portable DVD player; movies and television series are great diversions. Also, don't forget "real toys" like baseballs and frisbees.

You can express your thoughtfulness to your favorite soldier by sending them items that can be bartered. For example, tobacco, used by my own grandfather in World War II, is still a great bargaining chip for soldiers who are looking for somebody to take over a shift or share rations with. Discreetly packaged men's magazines will also be welcome. However, remember that you cannot ship certain items: liquor, drugs, and ammunition should not be mailed, especially internationally.

Do you have any good ideas that a service member such as a sergeant or lieutenant to captain would appreciate? Create and send them togift basket and boost their morale. Sending letters and photographs are always welcome and tells them back home someone is thinking of them. Whatever you decide to send, check the regulations for what is allowed to be sent to them.

Problems of Gardasil Beginning to Emerge

On May 22, 2007, five schoolgirls at Sacred Heart Girls College in suburban Melbourne, Australia, were taken to the hospital after receiving an injection of Gardasil, the newest vaccine to be mandated for cervical cancer. Soon after the vaccination, twenty-six girls were seen at the campus medical clinic. Five were admitted to the hospital: Two were kept overnight for dizziness; one had temporary paralysis and loss of speech. The condition of the remaining two was not known. (1)

In the U.S., symptoms similar to those experienced by the Australian girls have been reported to the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS). Since the approval of the vaccine in June, 2006, there have been at least 1.600 adverse events reported. Here are a few examples directly from theVAERS reporting pages:

Immediately after injection patient complained of severe pain at site. Fell off table and fainted for approximately 10-15 seconds. Hyperventilating. Complained of headache, blurry vision; vision test was normal. Vomiting x 1 in the parking lot and was momentarily inarticulate speech. Sent to ER where her neurological exam was normal except for word recall "coffee instead of coughing" and said "Sired instead of tired."

A female patient was vaccinated with a first dose of HPV Vaccine. Subsequently as the patient was leaving the examination room, the patient fainted. The patient recovered shortly after fainting.

A 14 year old female was vaccinated with Gardasil. It was reported that the patient was sitting on a bench. When thenurse left the room, the patient apparently fainted and ended up falling off bench. It was reported that it was unsure if the patient had broken her nose but there was blood. At the time of this report, the outcome of the events were unknown.

VAERS is a passive surveillance system and depends upon voluntary reporting by clinicians and parents of serious health problems following vaccination. Although VAERS reports do not prove causation, they can provide a warning system that a vaccine may be causing health problems.

It has been estimated that fewer than 10 percent, even as low as 1 to 4 percent, of adverse events from a prescription drug or a vaccine are ever reported.(2) If only 1 percent of all adverse events associated with Gardasil are being reported to VAERS,there could have been as many as acute health problems from 160.000 the vaccine in less than one year. The long term neurological or immune system complications are completely unknown. It is uncertain if any of these vaccinated children will go on to develop cancer or fertility problems, damage to their genes, all of which Merck admits in its product insert have not been studied.

John Iskander, from the Center for Disease Control's immunization safety office has said, "There is absolutely no reason to think that there is anything in this vaccine that's going to make people more likely to faint". (3) Despite his assurances, there are ingredients in the vaccine that can cause recipients to become dizzy and faint.

Histidine, an amino acid, readily converts into another aminoacid, histamine, when it enters the body. When released, histamine causes redness, swelling, itching and allergic reactions leading to widening of capillaries, decreased blood pressure people can faint. The vaccine also contains Polysorbate 80, an agent used in creams, ointments, lotions, and multiple medical preparations including vitamin oils, and anticancer agents. Polysorbate 80 can cause potentially fatal reactions including anaphylaxis in, characterized by a sharp drop in blood pressure, hives, and breathing difficulties people can faint. (4)

Fainting spells after vaccination can have serious consequences. An article published in the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine (1997), reviewed the reports of 697 syncope (fainting) that occurred after vaccinationand had been reported to VAERS between 1990 and 1995. More than 97 percent of the events have occurred within 30 minutes of a vaccine, establishing a causal relationship. Of these, six patients sustained a serious head injury, including skull fracture, cerebral bleeding and cerebral "contusion". Three of these patients required brain surgery and two were left with substantial residual neurological deficits at six months to two years after follow-up. (5) Dizziness and fainting after vaccination is not something to be taken lightly.

As for the children in Australia, the vaccination program is scheduled to continue in June. The college is confident that this program of vaccination is safe to offer to students, "says Christopher Dalton, the school principal. "We will be workingwith the Department of Human Services Victoria and the City of Monash Immunization Services in the planning vaccination program. "

The assumption is that illness and dizziness are normal reactions to a vaccine. The overriding theme for the Australians is that We have a vaccine, and we will use it. For little girls in the U.S., watchful waiting is advised.

Hemangiosarcoma-A (Usually) Quiet and Dangerous Dog Cancer

November is Pet Cancer Awareness Month. Among the most deadly of canine cancers is hemangiosarcoma, or cancer of the blood vessels. Hemangiosarcoma can either present as skin cancer, which can be successfully treated if caught early enough, or as cancer of the internal organs, particularly the spleen or the heart. The prognosis for splenic or cardiac hemangiosarcoma is extremely poor, even with aggressive treatment, as frequently the first sign of any problem is when the tumor ruptures and causes massive internal bleeding. An additional complication arises from the fact that since it is a blood vessel cancer, the cancer cells have usually spread to other areas of the body by the time of diagnosis. As a result, the median survival time for internal tumorspost-diagnosis is measured in weeks or months, even with surgery and chemotherapy. Hemangiosarcoma can occur in any breed, but there is an identified pre-disposition in German Shepherd dogs, labrador retrievers and golden retrievers. Within my own circle of friends, pet parent in the past year we have lost to Siberian husky, Australian shepherd, golden retriever and my own miniature poodle, Tiny, to hemangiosarcoma.

What are the signs and symptoms to watch for? For skin-based tumors, any unusual growth on the skin should be evaluated by your veterinarian and biopsied if there is any suspicion of cancer. It is a good idea to check your pet's skin frequently, particularly as he ages, for any abnormal lumps or bumps. Many are benign, but only your veterinarian and apathologist can identify cancerous skin growths.

For internal organ cancer, the signs can be much more subtle, and sometimes non-existent. In the cardiac form of hemangiosarcoma, you might notice weakness, weight loss, loss of appetite, difficulty breathing or difficulty recovering from any kind of exertion. These can all be signs of simple aging, other heart or lung problems, or tumor growth. Again, a visit to your veterinarian is in order for possible x-rays, ultrasound, CT or other diagnostic scans to determine the cause of the problem. If not diagnosed, the tumor will eventually rupture and cause massive internal hemorrhage.

In the form of splenic hemangiosarcoma, unless the tumor is extremely large and can be felt on abdominal exam, the first warning sign might betotal collapse when the tumor ruptures. Tiny's case, he exhibited greater than usual "old man" weakness "one evening at home, and could not stand up. He was seventeen years old at the time, and had a bulging abdomen to begin with due to loss of muscle tone associated with aging. I quickly rushed him to the veterinary emergency clinic (he was never one to have his emergency situations during regular veterinary clinic hours), where the doctor quickly his abdomen and Hooker withdrew its bloody fluid. She talked with me about her suspicions that a splenic tumour had ruptured, and recommended an ultrasound to confirm her diagnosis. Ultrasound did show a very large spleen as well as some suspicious spots on the liver. We discussed the two options: surgery to remove the spleen and the suspectportions of his liver or euthanasia. Given his age and all of the potential complications, we made the difficult decision to say goodbye.

But, when they brought into the Tiny room for that final procedures, he had miraculously recovered from his collapse, was very excited to see us, and started asking us to play with him. The veterinarian suspected that the internal bleeding had stopped and that he had re-transfused himself. After more discussion of the other alternatives and based on the fact that he seemed to be telling us that he wasn't ready to go just yet, we brought him home and scheduled to visit specialist early the next morning.

Tiny had a splenectomy and partial liver lobectomy, and came through the surgery with flying colors, especially given his age. We optedfor a shortened and low-dose course of chemotherapy, and for the remainder of his life he took several mild medications such as doxycycline and Deramaxx to help keep the cancer at bay. He also received acupuncture and Chinese herbal formulations in addition to Western medicine. In spite of the six months or less that most patients survive hemangiosarcoma, Tiny lived another two and a half years until the cancer spread to his brain and his mouth. When he began to have difficulty eating and started having seizures, it was time to help him cross the Rainbow Bridge. " His outcome and length of survival with good quality of life was unusually positive, but he was a fighter with a strong will to live.

Survival in hemangiosarcoma is largely a function of how early it is caught and whetherit is a surface/skin lesion instead of an internal tumour. Treatment options may be limited, especially if a tumor ruptures, and diagnostics, surgery and chemotherapy can be expensive. You know your dog better than anyone else, and are in the best position to make informed decisions (with the help of your veterinarian) as to the best course of action if this deadly cancer strikes your dog.
